Capalino Launches Inaugural ‘Love Your City’ Day as Part of Corporate Citizenship Agenda

Love Your City Day 454

Capalino Partners with Citizens Committee for New York City and the Frederick E. Samuel Resident Association in Central Harlem

On August 13, 2015, Capalino participated in Love Your City Day, the first of many volunteer days planned for the Capalino team throughout the five boroughs of New York City as part of our corporate citizenship agenda.

Jim Capalino

In partnership with the Citizens Committee for New York City and the Frederick E. Samuel Resident Association in Central Harlem, the Capalino team – including CEO Jim Capalino, COO Travis Terry, and Executive Vice President and CSR Leader Jeanne Mullgrav- spent the day getting our hands dirty volunteering at a garden and green space run by senior NYCHA residents in Harlem.

The garden, located at 140th Street and Malcolm X Blvd, is managed by the Frederick E. Samuel Resident Association, a group that has been beautifying Harlem through greening, gardening, and education since 2009. The association is also working to address health problems within the community by offering access to fresh fruits and vegetables as well as cooking and nutrition classes.

The Capalino team organized into small groups to weed raised beds, clean-up the site, plant, till, build fences, and build a compost system for the garden. Working hand and hand with seniors from the community, it was a meaningful afternoon to support this important community in their pursuit of healthy food. We also learned about the hard work and tremendous resilience of the community in the senior housing surrounding the garden. To continue these efforts, our firm is also making a small contribution to the garden in order for the community to plant more seeds in the newly-weeded beds.

“We were delighted to support the work of an incredible Frederick E. Samuel Resident Association as they come together to bring their community nutrition awareness and fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Jim Capalino, CEO and Founder of Capalino. “We are excited to be a part of their resident-led efforts to make their community stronger, more involved, and healthier.”

The event was organized by the Capalino Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practice, which includes Jeanne Mullgrav, Executive Vice President, Cathleen Collins, Senior Vice President, and Safeena Mecklai, Special Projects Associate.

“Our CSR practice works with clients to leverage their employees’ skills, talents, and time to create a meaningful and impactful corporate citizenship agenda in New York City, said Jeanne Mullgrav. “Our company’s commitment to CSR not only includes working with our clients, but also encouraging this important work internally as a team.”

RichardLove Your City Day was coordinated in partnership with the Citizens Committee for New York City, a group that gives grants to help New Yorkers, especially in low-income areas, to come together and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Like Capalino, the Citizens Committee believes that people can make important changes happen on their streets and in their communities by working together. The Committee brings volunteers together with resident-led grassroots projects throughout the City to have maximumimpact.

We’re grateful to the residents of the community, the Frederick E. Samuel Resident Association, and the Citizens Committee for this meaningful opportunity to support the Harlem community and promote healthy living and green spaces. The Capalino team’s next Corporate Social Responsibility day will involve working with local youth on job readiness and career skills.
