The Brearley School Moves to Annex Neighboring Upper East Side Buildings

Months after backing out of a deal to buy a residential building filled with elderly, rent-stabilized tenants, The Brearley School has purchased another set of buildings to expand its teaching space, the New York Post reported.
The prep school at 610 East 83rd Street bought three neighboring buildings at 70, 72 and 74 East End Avenue.
A move into the building would displace residents who live at 15 of the 24 apartments in the buildings.
The tenants at the rent-stabilized buildings were surprised by the purchase and told the paper they would fight the school displacing them from their homes.
“I lived in New York over half a century,” resident Elizabeth Taylor told the Post. “If I’m forced out of this building, there is no way I could afford to live here.”
In March, The Brearley School backed out of talks to purchase a building at 85 East End Avenue after elderly residents there fought back.
The school currently serves 692 students and has distinguished alumni including Caroline Kennedy and actress Kyra Sedgwick.
