Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Jane’s Carousel in DUMBO
On a rainy, late summer afternoon in DUMBO, a crowd of politicians, city and state employees, dignitaries, philanthropists, and dedicated New Yorkers gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony for Jane’s Carousel, the long time dream of Jane Walentas and her husband David. With many of the people involved in the project on site, this opening party debuted one of the most incredible carousel restorations in the country, housed in the Jean Nouvel designed pavilion in Brooklyn Bridge Park. A spectacular addition to the Brooklyn waterfront and a generous gift from the Walentas family for future generations of New Yorkers to enjoy.

Capalino+Company Principal George Fontas Attended The ABNY Spirit of New York Awards Reception
At ABNY Dinner, Sadik-Khan Bumps Into Weinshall, Klein Has a Flashback
By Azi Paybarah 4/01 4:29pm
Celeste Katz has some highlights from the Association for a Better New York’s Spirit of New York Awards reception last night in East Midtown. Here’s a few from my notebook:
The two most visible figures in the war over bike lanes, NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan (pro) and her predecessor, Iris Weinshall (con) ran into each other. Weinshall embraced the commissioner by the elbows and both smiled and nodded at one another. (I didn’t get my camera out in time to capture the moment.) What did she say to the commissioner? Weinshall told me, “That’s between me and Janette Sadik-Khan, don’t you think Azi?”
During former School Chancellor Joel Klein’s remarks, ABNY’s president, Bill Rudin tried hushing the crowd. After he did, Klein joked, “This was like every education meeting I’ve ever been to. Nobody ever listens.”
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, in presenting an award to the Council’s Education Chairman Robert Jackson, joked he had so much spirt and energy, she feared he might combust.
Former comptroller, and current mayoral candidate Bill Thompson greeted his one-time fund-raiser, Suri Kasirer (who again is the top lobbyist in NYC). “I came here looking for you,” he said.
State Republican Chairman Ed Cox chatted with former Democratic City Councilwoman Eva Moskowitz; Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. chatted with former Congressman Mike McMahon. And former State Senator Craig Johnson and consultant George Fontas worked the room.

Case Study: The Baku Palace in Sheepshead Bay, New York

Public officials promulgate government regulations often with a good intention in mind. Unfortunately, these well-meaning but newly created rules can, at times, adversely affect what have already become cultural institutions in the community. However, it still is possible for both to find the middle ground and work a lasting solution.
Let’s have a look at the story of one of New York’s cultural icons, The Baku Palace.
The Baku Palace: A Cultural Icon Under Threat
The Baku Palace is a restaurant that specializes in traditional Russian cuisine. Since 1995, the establishment has become a haven for Soviet expatriates who crave a taste of Azerbaijani home-cooked food. As a matter of fact, Baku Palace serves as one of the official caterers for the United Nations.
This Azerbaijani restaurant was established in 2001, when its owner, Mikhail Davidov, decided to lease the property at 2001 Emmons Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. The 7,500-foot eatery has a banquet hall with Czech chandeliers, exquisite lighting, rich artwork, and Belgian fabrics – making it the one of the best urban venues for special occasions like wedding receptions, birthday parties and religious festivities.
